From Michigan Roots to Southern Sunshine: Cathy’s Journey to Cherry Laurel
Around Cherry Laurel, everyone knows Catherine Mackela simply as “Cathy” — and after spending just a few minutes with her, it’s easy to see why she’s loved by so many.
Named after her grandmother Catherine, whom she adored, Cathy grew up on a family farm in Michigan alongside her brother Alex, helping grow fruits and vegetables. “It was hard work,” she says, “but I loved it.”
Years later, Cathy followed her grandmother to sunny Hollywood, Florida, where she met her husband Frank. After his military service, the couple packed up the car and made Tallahassee home, where they raised their three children — Billy, Laura, and Kristy.
“I’m so lucky to have them,” Cathy says proudly.
After working for years as a secretary for an insurance company in downtown Tallahassee, Cathy eventually found herself living alone after Frank passed away and her children started families of their own.
Then she discovered Cherry Laurel.
“The friendly people I was accustomed to just seemed to automatically appear here,” Cathy says. “No more cooking, no more cleaning, and no more being alone.”
One of her favorite surprises? Chef-prepared meals every day.
“Chef Jimmie’s fried chicken is hands down the best fried chicken I’ve ever had,” she laughs.
Today, Cathy enjoys exercise classes, activities, outings, dancing to live music during “Party with Carty,” and spending time with friends — all while maintaining the independence she values most.
“I retire at my own pace,” she says with a smile.
And when asked what advice she would give others considering independent living?
